The most common complaints encountered from business people is that their accountants only tell them how much tax is due rather than how to avoid it. This view is understandable, but responsibility for that situation rests on both the accountant and the business person.

..............................................................................................................

By the time the accountant is presented with the trading record, there is very little that can be done except to calculate the tax due - because they are dealing with facts from the past. If you wish to keep tax to a minimum it is vital that you discuss your plans in advance.

Tax planning falls into three distinct areas which could be described as white, grey and black.

Plans made within the white area are completely safe and reliable because they are expressly allowed by the UK authorities. When planning enters the grey area things are less certain. These steps are not illegal but they do have to be justified and can be questioned or even disallowed at some stage in the future. You may not be surprised to learn that action taken within the black sector is probably criminal because it would be more akin to tax evasion rather than tax avoidance.

It is important to remember that although solutions are available to most taxation concerns, the costs can prove disproportionate.
