Conventional motor insurance provides cover for a caravan or any other trailer whilst attached to a towing vehicle. This all changes when the trailer in unhitched . . . and marine is another kettle of fish.

Motor insurance of this kind usually provides cover against the risk of causing injury, death or damage to other property. There is no cover for the caravan itself, or its contents, and the protection against liabilities that the owner may owe towards other parties ceases as soon as the caravan is unhitched.

A separate policy can provide protection against all of those risks. Costs vary to reflect the value of the caravan and its contents, the location at which it is stored, whether the caravan is moved at any time and also the use to which it is put because some caravans are rented out as a business venture.

Similar comments apply to marine vessels but the insurance protection is a little more complex.

Separate cover needs to be organised for the legal liability owed by the owner or operator of the vessel towards passengers as well as the cover needed towards people and property outside the vessel.

The geographical limits within which the vessel will operate are particularly important and so is the extent of qualifications held by the owner of the vessel.
