Private
medical insurance is available in many forms. The cheapest provides a
cash benefit if you need to stay in hospital and it can also provide
money to help with the purchase of new dentures or spectacles. As the
quality of cover rises the cost does too.

An
intermediate policy will meet the cost of private medical treatment and
consultations up to a modest limit at a restricted range of hospitals.
There is commonly a qualification to this to keep the cost down so the
private medical expenses are only incurred if the NHS waiting list is
greater than, say, 16 weeks. Some insurers also impose an annual excess.
At the other extreme policies are available which meet the cost of
private treatment at any hospital anywhere in the world within very
generous limits. These policies can also be extended to include
comprehensive protection against the cost of dental care and optical
work.

The
NHS continues to provide an excellent service in the event of a medical
emergency, but it has not proved possible to maintain that same quality
for less pressing problems. Medical expenses insurance is primarily
designed to help you to afford the cost of jumping an NHS queue to
restore your optimum quality of life more quickly than would be the
case if you relied solely upon the NHS.
